What exactly is a GPS / AVL System?

The Global Positioning System or GPS is a technology that became available to the public by President Ronald Regan back in 1983 and is now managed and maintained by the United States Air Force 50th Space Wing.

These 31 medium earth orbiting “Positioning Satellites” are used by Certified Tracking Solutions Automated Vehicle Location or “AVL” devices to calculate the vehicle’s Real-Time Location, Speed, Direction and Time by Microwaves that are transmitted from the Satellite at the speed of light. Virtually all tracking systems on the market are equipped with a GPS Receiver. The GPS information is then transmitted wirelessly through a communication modem inside the tracking device that is installed in the vehicle being tracked.

Most GPS/AVL systems utilize cellular communication networks to transmit this GPS Status information. Certified Tracking Solution’s devices run off of the world standard GPRS/GSM cellular platform and can also utilize the Iridium Satellite communications network for transmission of AVL data virtually anywhere in the world.

This is CTS’s true claim to fame in that we also have specialized GPS tracking systems with “TrueSat” Technology which actually use a second satellite “Communication” network to provide “TrueSat” Coverage.

What is involved with GPS / AVL Solutions?

Certified Tracking Solutions offers a variety of GPS / AVL devices.  These devices calculate their GPS location data and transmit this information via either a cellular or satellite wireless networks to a routing server that is connected to the internet. Certified Tracking Solutions embraces two different types of mapping interfaces that would allow you to have access to your entire fleet’s real-time location on a computer by utilizing either our PC base software or Web based interface.

A PC based interface is where the tracking software is installed onto your personal computer that has internet access.  This allows access to historical information, greater device control, speed and security.

The second type of interface is “Internet Based”.  This gives the user the flexibility to log on to a website with a user name and password from any computer with internet connectivity. Both types of interfaces provide excellent vehicle information reporting tools to help you improve your fleets efficiency and overall performance.

How often does a GPS / AVL / Telematics System report in?

One of Certified Tracking Solution’s key competitive advantages is that they are able to offer customized device reporting parameters based on the specific needs of your company. There are two types of reports, the first is “Movement” based and the second is “Event” driven.

Movement reporting is derived from the vehicle’s movement pattern.  We have the ability to configure specific devices to report their positions based on Start/ Stop Thresholds, Time, Distance, Course Change or a combination of all of these movements.

Event driven reports include those where some type of trigger is reached, such as an over-speed, excessive engine idling or an input or trigger such as a PTO or equipment power on or off.  The second type of report is where the GPS position report is triggered by the GPS device registering an actual “Event” which can be forwarded to the Fleet Manger via emailed or SMS Text Message.

Depending on your Fleet’s needs, this could be as simple as an Over-Speed warning with a timed grace period. There are also event reports such as Excessive Idling, Min/Max Temperatures and Alarm Triggers, to Equipment input status changes to Battery Disconnect warnings or even low battery voltage warnings.

What is meant by a “Covert Install” and why is it important.

Certified Tracking Solutions takes pride in having a “Best in Class” installation team.  We have the expertise to not only install your GPS AVL system in a manner that will maintain the integrity of the factory wiring but to also ensure that all hardware devices INCLUDING the GPS and communications antennas are out of sight of the drivers and more importantly possible thieves.

CTS has coined this type of install as being “Covert” and boasts the fact that we can even achieve a “TrueSatCovert install, through the use of true military grade antennas which are also used in ballistic and cruise missiles by both the Canadian and US Armed Forces. This eliminates the need for a “tub” or “dome” antenna being drilled into the vehicle’s roof, a standard practiced by the majority of GPS AVL companies in the North American market place.
